Double page spread final cut compared to inspiration

Here is my final cut double page spread with my inspiration which is a article with David Bowie from MOJO magazine. I have based my DPS on this page for a few parts but also changed some things I thought I could improve.
Firstly. I asked my model to have a similar pose to the of David Bowie as I really liked how it looked so I tried to emulate a similar pose. Also I liked the black and white colours scheme and my image looked a lot better when it was within this colour scheme. I was very happy with how my image came out, so much so I decided make this page image dominated instead of the boxy look which is what I intended to do originally. I feel this worked well for me and how my magazine ended up. I then also included 3 columns of text which is very conventional. I did include a quote though it is not as big as the on from MOJO magazine.
I am very happy with how this page came out in the end and it may be my favourite that I created.

Contents page final cut with inspiration

Here is my final cut contents page along the side of my inspiration which again is a MOJO contents page. Now for this piece i did decide to base my contents page on this one which includes Terry Hall. I first decided to emulate this page when I first saw it really after I decided to restart my page after my rough cut. I just saw this image dominating page as very interesting as it challenges standard conventions which is something I wanted to experiment with.
Something I really liked and wanted to emulate was the angle shot as this was something I had not come across before. Now since this is not very conventional it my not look very good but since I have based it on this page it works well and it is a page that stands out. For the high angle shot I had to stand on a table with a tripod which was safer than it may sound. I did not intentionally mean to emulate the colour scheme as I originally started the colour scheme on the front cover and then put it on the contents without realising. I have included the date and issue like the inspiration. Also I made it so the stories are down the left hand side and do not overlap the image at any time.
I am happy with how the final cut for this page turned out and I think the page I used as inspiration played a large part and I am glad.

Front cover final cut with inspiration

This is my final cut of my front cover with the magazine I have based mine on; MOJO magazine.
Now I have not tried to emulate this exact page but I wanted to go for a similar look to a MOJO front cover so I have used this issue with David Bowie on as a example.
AS you can see I have followed some key conventions that MOJO have used, the first being the dominating image being in the centre on the page and consisting of the model's head and top half of body. Also I have made sure that not text goes over the model's face or top half of the body on the page. I also put the name of my magazine behind the head of the artist which is very conventional. Then I have also included what is actually inside of this issue and the artists involved. as well as this is had the main section of text along the bottom of the image about the cover star himself as I had found this from the research that I had done. I have also included more than one image on the front cover which is seen as a conventional touch to my magazine. However I have challenged the conventions by including my bar-code on the middle left in stead of being found usually at the bottom of the page.
I am very happy with how my front cover has came out and am very glad I chose MOJO as my inspiration.

Comparison of rough cut compared to final cut DPS

Here is my Double page spread for both my final and rough cuts. The final cut is the top image and the rough cut the bottom image.

As you can there is a lot that is very different from one another. I am happy with as I wanted to see a big change from my rough cut to my final cut. The layout my look similar but in fact they are actually quite different in terms how they are set out. The rough cut has a background level which includes the gradient and the image is a separate layer on top of it which does not look particularly very good in my opinion. However the final cut is all one image and is used as the full background, so the background is actually part of the image I took. The two images are very different in terms of quality and relevance. The rough cut image has green lines around the side which is poor editing and the image itself is not a great photo. The final cut image is more relevant to the page and is of a higher standard of photo. Another missed convention in the rough cut is that there is only 2 columns of text when conventionally there is usually 3 which I have put right in my final cut.
I am very happy with my final cut and feel I have learnt a lot from the mistakes I made with the rough cut which I feel made me want to work harder so I did not repeat the same mistakes again.

Here is my final cut and my rough cut of my contents page. The final cut is on the left and the rough cut on the right.
The difference between the two is very noticeable in terms of how conventions and quality. There is a  different design and idea for both of the cuts. The first being that the final cut is based on Mojo and the rough cur on NME. Also the final cut is following the image dominated look where as the rough cut is more of a blocky look contents page. However that isn't the only difference. The rough cut is just all round poor in terms of the quality overall and the conventions used. The images for the rough cut look like floating heads in a sense and have no real correlation to the rest of the page. This is no longer an issue for my final cut as the image is clearly the main focus point and this is clear to see. The colours for the rough cut aren't very conventional and the gradient used is nothing sort of poor. The final cut has a clear colour scheme and is very effective as it gives it a professional look.

This is the comparison of my final cut and rough cut of the front cover. The final cut is the image on the left and the rough cut is the image on the left.
I feel the two pages couldn't be further apart in terms of the quality, codes and conventions and how happy I personally am with each of them. I feel the final cover is just as a whole a better product and fits better with what I wanted to achieve. Now saying that I had to do what I did for my rough cut to realise how to right my wrongs and but them right. However I did not feel that I could fix the many issues I found with the rough, thus leading me to restart the page. I thought if I have a blank canvas  would be able to produce a more quality product than fixing the improvements. This ended up proving to be a real good decision and my magazine has benefited from it. The main difference between the two magazines and pages is that I based the rough cut to NME and then the final cut to MOJO. I think you can really see this from the layout of the pages themselves. The brutal truth would be that I took more care with my final cut than perhaps the rough cut but I think that is shown with the products and also the quality itself. The two images contrast massively with not only the quality of image and editing but suiting within the genre.

My evaluation progress

Today I have finished recording my evaluation. I recorded it within the school studio and did so within my free periods and media lessons for 2 days. I used the Nikon 5 100 camera to record like I did to take my photos. I will now plan how I will set out my evaluation and start editing of this weekend for the deadline Tuesday 2nd of may at 4:30 pm. I will upload my evaluation once it is completed. I will be using Adobe PremierPro in order to edit my evaluation.

Double page spread final cut

This is the final cut of my Double Page Spread, another page that I started again from scratch with after my rough cut. This is a finished product I am very happy with now it is completed. The thing I am most happy with is the photo itself. I don't think the photo could have came off any better than I anticipated. In fact I was not going to have it image dominated but I decided it looked a lot better than having sections on the page and so this is the reasoning behind this decision. Two little added touches I am particularly happy with are my quote and signature. I finished what I thought was my final cut and then reviewed all three pages to add in any details to improve my magazine and these are two I added in. The quote is a highlighted article from what the artist says in the article. Then the quote is the artist's signature. Again I am very happy with how this page has came out and feel there isn't anything I could intentionally do to improve it.

Contents Final cut

This is now my completed contents page which I very happy with, and this is something I am proud enough of to have as my final cut. I feel that I have used and challenged some codes and conventions of this type of genre and page. This page is based on one I saw in MOJO magazine and will do a comparison to it in a later blog. I really liked the idea of having a high angle shot as it was very unusual but seemed to work very well with how the page was set out so I tried to emulate this but also put my own touches on. This is a completely different page to what my rough cut was and I am amazed at the difference in both of them in such a short space of time. I feel this page now looks very professional with how it is in general and overall I have over the moon with the product.

Front Cover final cut

Here is my final cut for my Front cover and I am very pleased with how this has turned out from where I was a couple months ago with my rough cut. I feel the page has a very professional look and I have attempted to include and also challenge some common codes and conventions, some being like having no text or images over the top of the model's face. Now using my feedback I received from the rough cut I decided to start again which was quite a big decision instead of choosing to edit what I already had. The whole page has changed apart from the genre and target audience. The image is very conventional in terms of it have the model's head, shoulders and majority of the body in the shot. Also another element I am very pleased with is the cutting of the image so I have the affect where the name of the magazine is actually behind the model which is something that is very common from the research I have looked at. Also I have included a second image of another artist on this cut. The other artists have been put included in a more subtle way that before and looks a lot better in my personal opinion.
This page has certainly been a struggle but I am very happy with how it has turned out in the end and the overall product itself.

Start of evaluation

I have started reviewing the question for my evaluation and have started writing out responses to them. The deadline for the evaluation is the 2nd of May. I shall do my evaluation in video format. I am not yet sure which software I will use to edit as such but I will hope to make a lot of progress of the coming days.

Coming towards the end of the project, these are all the fonts that I have included in my magazine. Not all have been used but they will have been tested and kept or removed. There also is a few extra since the last time I reviewed about them. All of the new fonts have made an appearance in my magazine which is the whole reasoning in doing another blog about them.

Here is another little added detail I decided to include on my DPS from a recent review of my work. It is a quote from the article with the artist and it from within the text and I have highlighted it as a important part of the text from the interview.

Here is another added detail I decided to include in my magazine more specifically the DPS. It is a signature from my artist which is actually going to be below the article of text on the DPS. I thought this idea would look good in the magazine and I quite like how personal it is with the artist. I did the by downloading a font called Hijrnotes which is actually a signature font.

Since my last update I have finished the article for my DPS. From my research I conducted a Q and A
(Question and Answers) type format for the article. To fit the colour scheme I stuck with the use of the black and white colours. The interviewer is in white and my artist's responses in black. I also changed the font from Dolce Vita Heavy to Doulos as the first font was in all capitals and I could not have that form my article. I still have improvements to make on this area.

FC update 3

Since the last update of the update of my front cover there has been some significant changes made and plenty added.
Firstly I have added a photo of my other model in the top right hand corner which will advertise his CD which will be included. I put this in as from my research it is very rare to see only one image on the front cover. I will include a banner that will say it is this artist's album being released but the is something I will do later. Another change is that I have included some names of other artists down the side of the page. This are all artists that would be included within the magazine, some of these names will also appear on the contents page. Also I have moved the 'D.Young' title and the text to go with it from the middle of the image to along the bottom of the page. I wanted to have as little text as possible over the white of image or the models face. This is to show that the model is the most important thing on the page, hence why the model is in front of the magazine name.
This page is not yet complete so there may well be another update but if not then it will be the final cut.

Reasoning to change contents colour scheme

As you can see I have changed from whatever was originally black to white. I just started playing around with different colour to see if the overall affect changed and I clicked on white and I think it really brightens up the whole page and makes it look more appealing. Also on the second image there is more detail but I think the white really emphasises the orange as well which is a nice affect.

From studying MOJO magazine closely, I was able to find this. It is in case your free CD was no included and since I will be advertising a free CD inside I thought it would only be right if I also had this little message to replicate on the front cover. Also it looks very good as a bit of added detail to my magazine.

Since planning to change the layout of my DPS here is the new look with some text over the top so you can see what is going to look like once all the article is complete. I thought it would be go for you to see the difference between the old and the new with some text over the top. You may also notice after seeing my last post I changed the article font to Doulos and here is the new font. This is justa little update on the progress this page is making.

Changing article font

I have changed my article text from Dolce vita heavy to Doulos. This is because that the original font does not have a lower case so the text is constantly in upper case which it cannot be for my article of any little bits of text so I chnaged it. I look on Da font for a new font and happen to find Doulos which works very well and I am happy with the decision.

Here is the recent update of my contents page. As you can see I now have the image edited and on the page which I am happy with. It is not yet completed as I still have include text with my stories and put a lot of added details to my page.

DPS background change

As you can see I have change my layout for my DPS compared to the plan I had for my first DPS update after my rough cut. I was originally meant to have the image one one side of the DPS and have a quote and text filling the other side. Instead I have no decided to have the image take up the whole DPS and have the text on top of it. I feel this will have a better look to my overall page and give a different look.

Lokking like MOJO

This is from my contents page and it is based on MOJO's contents page, I have based pretty much all of my magazine on on MOJO has a very good design and is soemthing I myself am very fond of. I shall show comparisons at a later date of my magazine in comparison to MOJO. This is just a little added detail to if anything my make my magzine a little more professional.

This photo will be included in the top righthand corner of my Front cover. This is because the I will be advertising a free CD on the front cover of my magazine and this is the artist who the CD will be from. You may also notice that this is the model from my contents page.

half term progress

During this Easter half term I have spent time focusing on my magazine and making real progress towards finishing it. I finished the term with a very strong foundation in which to build from, which allowed me to take care with details and improving my overall product.

Front cover editing - layering images

Very similar to what I did for DPS expect for my front cover. The difference here is that I had to do a lot more editing of the second copy as the hair was quite difficult to cut out and may leave significant patches had I not cut some of the hair off. So like the DPS once the images are cut out they must be put on top of one another and then it creates the effect that the model is in front of the name but maintaining the background which I am very happy with.

Here we have two versions of the same photo. Obviously one is the non edited cut and then the edited cut. I had to edit the photo as it will be being used on my contents page so I decided it needed work and the first version would not be suitable. The main improvement that has been made is the change to the background. What I have done here is remove the shadow and paper on the floor by putting a new layer over the top of my photo and cutting out the model from within it. This means I can use the image straight up as the image with it also being the background and it working in both respects.

I have decided that this will be the photo I will use for my contents page. This photo is from a high angle shot and it is based on a piece of research I found in Mojo magazine and the image it is based on is in one of my previous posts. The image was probably one of the best quality photos that was taken in the shoot. I wanted the model slightly to the right of the image so I can have the subheadings etc down the left hand side. There will be some editing needed to improve the image but I shall do the in time.

FC update 2

This is now my front cover and there have been some slight changes since the last update of this page. Firstly, I have incorporated the colour orange as a main colour onto this page as it has quite a nice effect and works well with the background and other main colours.

 

My model has been given a name as an artist. Also there are a few names of artists down the left hand side. I will be looking to include more in the upcoming future.

 

Also there is sticker sort of effect on the right hand side which has information about some albums inside the magazine. These are the only updates so far but there will be more to come soon.

DPS photo layering

So here we have two versions of the same image which were both shown on the previous post.  As you can probably tell one has a background, and the other does not. This is because the image with now background shall be put on top of the image with a background so that it does have a background, and will look like it is the background of the original image. So as you can see the two images are side by side and nothing has happened yet so this is the process of the layering. As you can see the image with the background has text on top of it, I will have to measure the copy so it is the exact same height and width, as other wise you could clearly see there are two different images. 

So here I have started to move the second photo (with no background) on top of the original (the one with a background). The two images are not yet in line so you can still see that there are two images instead of looking like just the one. However you can see that the original image is behind the text and the second image is in front which will eventually put the text in the middle of both.

After that, the images should be on top of eachother but if not then use the arrows keys to adjust the positioning or even adjust the size of the non background image.

Although this may take a while to do I think the outcome looks very good and is realistic from what I have found back from my research and it work nicely with the image.

front cover update 2

Since my rough cut I started from scratch with the best ideas I had previously and my new ideas that I had. So here is my updated front cover. As you can see it is quite basic as it only consists of my main image and the name of the magazine itself.

There are actually two lots of the same image on this page but one has a background and one doesn't but I will talk more about that in my front cover image layering post. I am a lot happier with my new name and it's look in comparison to the old one which looked a lot like the NME logo. I obviously have a lot to include like more stories and little added touches on each but this is only the first update. There will be plenty more to come for this page.
